Paris Fashion Week: Alexander McQueen Autumn Winter 2010-2011

Alexander McQueen's untimely death has reignited everyone's love for McQueen's work which is a shame since he was always a genius that created works of art that walk down the runway rather than just clothes that hang off a model. I found his work fascinating, something that bridges the gap between what can be actually considered fashion. He is definitely more about the style. Who can forget last season's shoes....no way

But lets talk about his final collection at Paris Fashion Week which was revealed in private showings in respect to the great man and his work. He seemed to be inspired by everything regal and art with intricate usage of gold and beautiful rich materials. It seemed his clothes had just popped out of a painting from the 16th century. It was stunning and reflected his belief in craftsmanship and detail to every piece he creates.

Every piece that was shown had something I thought was beautiful so it was very difficult to narrow it down to my favourite 5 favourite looks; therefore there are 6. Images are all credited to Vogue Australia.

UNBELIEVABLE.

Off the topic of good ole' rock and roll

This as a good a time to introduce the latest aspect of my blog. STYLE. I love music and style. Now I'm not just talking about fashion and the trends for the season. I mean individual style that shows your personality and makes you feel comfy. I'm all for experimentation that sometimes doesn't pay off and fun in the stuff you have to wear everyday of your life practically. Although, I'm a believer in the classics like white shirts, tailored pants and amazing accessories (number 1 really). In reality this actually links with music easily since artists today relate their music often to a particular style. We all think Lady Gaga's outfits are a bit out there but I think it shows the type of artist she wants to be; edgy whether this is actually true will depend on whether you like her music.

This is why from now on I think this blog should be about the 2 things I like most that aren't my family and friends. I will show you all that I am inspired by in this world whether it be through my love of music which really did come first and effortless style. By the way, I will not necessarily post outfits of what I wear because there are a zillion blogs that do this and do it well. Mainly you will get an insight into what I think is interesting and will reinterpret for myself.

So to start off, an exciting package came my way today from the awesome store ASOS and it included a few things including a 21st bday pressie for my cousin which I will not post here but I did geta few bargains shipped here including brogues, motorcycle boots and a cardy for the boy...woohooo! All things that I will wear forever. Did I tell you I rarely get rid of clothes unless they're worn to death...

Everything here is easy for me to wear.

2010 Album Releases: GOLDFRAPP - HEAD FIRST

One of my fave electronic bands Goldfrapp release their fifth album Head First on March 22nd 2010. This record will continue their trend with synth-based pop and will differentiate itself from their last release Seventh Tree which was much more folk with sythesizers in there as well. I love Alison's vocals I think she can really bring it and if any of you love Lady Gaga and La Roux it is compulsory listening that you get Goldfrapp's Supernature. Love it, love it!!!

The first single is 'Rocket' and will be officially released on March 8th and apparently you can buy it on Itunes already and it has been leaked on Youtube but I can't seem to find it anywhere. If anyone has it please post the link in the comments, I would be forever grateful.

Top 10 Albums of 2009

So it’s that time again...the time for Best Ofs and Top 10 lists. This blog is no exception as there are many things that excited me about 2009 that other years haven’t. 2009 was the year of the synthesizer, art infused pop and the return of strong ladies in pop and rock. There were many disappointments...Britney you can stand up for this part but overall the music was awesome.
Before I start my list I’d just like to say that I have read a few articles lately that have talked about music and the last decade. Yes, music has changed especially in the way we get it. I no longer browse and buy from a CD shop but I can do it from the comfort of my home on Itunes. There, I browse hundreds of bands and artists and then buy their stuff. I am also recommended bands because I bought something similar. It’s FANTASTIC! But other than that I beg to differ that music is getting worse or going downhill, many of the same type of songs appeared in previous decades as they did in the naughties. There will always be cheesy pop songs every decade has them, I mean c’mon the YMCA isn’t brilliant song writing and neither are any of Jessica Simpson’s songs. Even I must admit that the idea of the songwriter in the studio writing for the artist was very prevalent during the 00s and probably will continue well into the future. However; teen pop will exist as long as teenagers roam the earth and rock, hip hop and electro have continued to push the boundaries. This is nothing new from the past.
2010 has now begun, what will this decade bring us?

1. It’s Blitz! – Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The return of NYCs finest. As soon as I heard it I knew it would be in my top 5. This record is a complete change to their previous work but is right on the money. Led by the charismatic and just plain awesome, Karen O they continue to reach massive success with amazing live shows (for the record I have yet to go to a YYYs show) and an incredible sense of style. Key Track: Heads Will Roll

2. The Resistance – Muse. I have not put up my full review of this album but in short it’s a musical odyssey...a space opera. These guys continue to be innovative with music and lyrics. They are willing to experiment in many styles that include classical, rock and electronic and use non-English lyrics but above all of this I love the musicianship that goes into all their work. Key Track: I Belong to You (+ Mon Cœur S'ouvre à ta Voix)

3. La Roux – La Roux. Electro-pop at its best. I’m seeing her in March super excited! I am in love with the subtle seriousness of the record. On the surface it seems like pop for the sake of pop but there are some serious issues dealt with on this record particularly in regards to relationships. Key Track: Colourless Colour.

4. In This Light and On This Evening – Editors. The darkness of the previous two albums is still there but this one shows a marked change from straight guitars and drums to the use of the synthesizers. I believe this has a lot to do with producer, Flood. I feel his influence greatly on this album. Also, there is a more Joy Division feel than the previous two which I adore and Tom Smith’s voice is hypnotic just like Ian Curtis’ was. Key Track: The Boxer.

5. No Line on the Horizon – U2. Their finest work of the decade. It’s definitely not a chart topping album which can be seen to be either good or bad but their U2 so they can do whatever they want. A return to experimentation and more subtle sounds but there 1 or 2 U2ish tunes which have kept the casual listeners happy. We can only hope that they continue to maintain the creative control they have and write amazing songs that give the listener the credit they deserve. Key Track: Moment of Surrender.

6. It’s Not Me It’s You – Lily Allen. I adore here. I love the sarcasm in the songs as well as the cheekiness. There is nothing wrong with good ole’ fashioned pop. Hopefully Lily does stay in the music business because there is no one like here. She makes good ole’ fashioned pop listenable because let’s face it the Britney’s of the world are ruining it for everyone. Talent is required to make good pop. Key Track: Not Fair

7. Horehound – The Dead Weather. A supergroup featuring Jack White and Alison Mosshart will always get a big tick in my book! I mean supergroups can be a bit crap but this is just pure genius blues infused rock and roll. It almost feels like early Rolling Stones stuff which is great since not many bands take on the blues. By the way, did I tell you I adore Alison! Key Track: Rocking Horse.

8. Music For Men – Gossip. I didn’t think anything could top ‘Standing In the Way of Control’ but this definitely comes close. This was produced by Rick Rubin and generally with his work I feel he makes it more commercially viable. First, single ‘Heavy Cross’ was played all over the radio here and are a much more mainstream band than before. Good for them they deserve success. This album is a must for those that can’t deal with their rock too heavy as it has a pop element mixed with a bit of punk and of course, the blues with Beth’s unbelievable voice. Also, please not the awesome album cover. Key Track: Dimestore Diamond.

9. To Lose My Life... – White Lies. A brilliant debut album probably the best one of the year. My heart beats a little faster when hearing ‘Death’. Geez...these guys have some much potential it makes me sick but let’s hope they can continue their good fortune for their follow up. Key Track: To Lose My Life.

10. Backspacer – Pearl Jam. This is the band’s most pop sounding record. The band themselves recognise that they are borrowing sounds from New Wave. As far as I can tell Backspacer is a far more melodic album than previous efforts but it obviously worked for them as it was their first album to hit number 1 in 13 years. It sounds amazing and different whilst still maintaining their status as a good ole’ fashioned rock band that has managed to come out of the grunge era successfully.
Key Track: Just Breathe.

Sorry about the massive amount of time between posts but I'd been sick for a few weeks and then pulled an insane amount of hrs for this project at work. I've been coming home from work and going straight to bed haven't even had time to catch up on emails. Anyways, I have loads to tell you all including my albums of the year and a few album reviews that I've already written out. So be prepared for a mass onslaught of posts. 2010 Album Releases: VAMPIRE WEEKEND - CONTRA

Everybodys favourite indie rockers Vampire Weekend are releasing their sophomore album, Contra on January 11th 2010. They have been described as Ivy League rock since the members of the band met while studying at Columbia University. These must be some reasonably smart guys or they are really good at faking it. Anyways, I loved their self-titled first album particularly 'Oxford Comma' which is just infectious pop/rock.

Contra seems to be more of the same which isn't necessarily a bad thing but can lead to bands being described as boring and non evolving. I believe most bands should evolve and take risks even if it doesn't necessarily pay off but at least they made an effort to do something that will go down in music history as unexpected. Back to Vampire Weekend, I've only heard the first single, 'Horchata' but who knows what the album will be like and I am certainly willing to be proven wrong.

Essentials for Spring and Summer

Well it certainly is hot in Melbourne and it's not even officially Summer yet!!! But I still love the long days and pretty floral dresses that come out of the closet. So I just wanted to share with you all my Spring/Summer essentials for the months ahead.

First and probably most importantly is good tunes...top 5 KILLER tracks to party to or chill with friends at a BBQ.

LDN - Lily Allen. Oh the joy...Lily at her best, full of cheekiness and sass.
Playground Love - Air. This is from the Virgin Suicides soundtrack and if you haven't seen it do because AIR do the whole film score and in my opinion it's a masterpiece.
Heart of Glass - Blondie. For by the pool whilst sipping long island iced tea. I adore this band for the fact they are considered true nu-wave artists with a sound grounded in punk highlighted with electronica and dance elements.
Space Oddity - David Bowie. I feel a sense of peace when I hear this song. This song is for those days when it is just too hot to do anything so you lie down and put a record on and lie as still as possible just taking in the sounds of your favourites. Bowie is perfect for this!
Walk Idiot Walk - The Hives. What a way to get a party started. I love these guys they just know how to write the perfect song. They also have an amazing sense of style which you know can make or break some bands. Walk Idiot Walk has a great video...love, love the crossword thingy.

Style Guide Spring/Summer

1. Sunnies.
Aside from keeing out the sun and all those UV rays they have become a fashion statement. Now the type you get is solely down to personal choice. However, some styles do look better on certain faces than others. In my case aviators do not look good on me because I have a round face. Therefore, I opt for more squarish styles. I particularly like the Wayfarer style but I am lemming the Wayfarer square in blue or purple. If someone can tell me where I can get them in blue I would be most grateful.

2. Sunscreen

I think in Australia this is pretty much a given as we all know to SLIP SLOP SLAP. Even those with darker skin tones must do this as I have had the unfortunate experience as to not realise that my skin was peeling until after I returned from a weekend away at the beach. Let me tell you not cool.

3. Florals
I say this in reference to clothing. Florals are great as they usually come in bright colors that are often more cooling than standard black. It feels fresh and fun. I, for one am going to go bright this summer with wacky floral skirts. See the 1990s for inspiration.

4. High waisted shorts
I love this look and think that it brings much more class to the whole idea of shorts. In the last 3 days I've seen far too many girls/adults wearing too short denim shorts. It's ok but I've seen enough to last a lifetime, people there are other styles out there that more often than not look better than the denims.

5. Statement Jewellery
I say the bigger the better. Also, you only ever have to wear the one piece as it stands on its own because overdoing it can look a bit craptastic. I wear something similar to the necklace below all the time and I get asked about it quite a lot.

Summer Festivals: Good Vibrations 2010 Lineup

So the weather is better and that means it's that time of year, the release of 2010 Summer Festival dates and lineups. The BDO has already had its first and I decided not to go because there aren't enough bands I wanted to see to warrant the high price of tickets. However, Good Vibrations is looking like a better option for me. I've always assumed that Good Vibrations is a more dance festival and I think it still is mainly but considering the lineup for 2010 I am seriously considering.

Now on to the all important dates:

2009 Album Releases: ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN - THE FOUNTAIN

In the past I remembered writing about Echo & the Bunnymen's 11th studio album, The Fountain. I have not actually listened to it yet but I have heard mix reviews about it. I hate reading the reviews before I have had a chance to listen so I think my perspective on it has already been somewhat tarnished. Oh well...let's hope I don't take MOJO's pespective as they have described it as an album of "...middle aged pop-rock".

It also did not shoot up the charts as many expected it to but have a listen to their first single 'Think I Need It Too' below and make your own judgement because I actually like quite like it.

Did you catch U2 Live from the Rose Bowl on YouTube?

Hello...me again
I hope you all enjoyed the once in a lifetime live streaming of U2 live from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday L.A. time but Monday arvo Melbourne time. Unfortunately I was not able to catch the live feed but I did catch the first rebroadcast as I sprinted home from work, well as fast as the train could go, to see it. The only problem with the streaming was you couldn't rewind or fast forward but YouTube have been nice enough to put it up as 2+ hr concert that you can pause and restart any time you want. Plus, they also have the individual songs up so you can skip the ones you are not so keen on. See below!

I have to say this was a very inventive thing to do but it also seems like a pretty obvious thing for a band to do. U2 were not only mad enough to be the first to do so but are a big enough band to pull it off with an even larger stage show to make it exciting not only for the 90,000 fans there but for all of us watching on our computers. The concert itself was unbelievable but I have seen enough YT vision to know the band still sound good and roughly what is on their set lists. However, this felt like a concert DVD with professional camera shots but that is not to say that the amateur vision was not bloody brilliant, so fans keep posting your videos please it's just this has a budget and directors etc...
Well watch it and enjoy the U2 extravaganza...

2009 Album Releases: EDITORS - IN THIS LIGHT AND ON THIS EVENING

Third album by British band Editors, In This Light and On this Evening is out now and it sounds good!!!! I've always loved their Joy Division-esque sound. I mean I'm a huge fan of the dark and depressing sound and lyrics of The Smiths, obviously Morrissey, Echo & the Bunnymen and Depeche Mode so it goes without saying these guys are high on my list. Their first album The Back Room had success but I think it was An End Has A Start that really exploded in Aus. It seems everyone was talking about 'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors' at the time. This new one was produced by Flood who has worked with everyone from U2 to Nine Inch Nails and Sigur Ros. I think this definitely rates as a great record but I am a bit disappointed with the lack of guitars as there are more synthesizers this time around. It has taken the No. 1 spot in the UK charts already so hopefully we'll hear about the band coming here for a tour!!!. Also, in case you were wondering I'm voting them for cover art of the year, forget what I said about YYY. It's so simplistic but extremely effective.

R.I.P Stephen Gately

I must admit I was a fan of Boyzone back in the day and I do sometimes go back to their old albums and it does hold up well. I have to say I would rather them and other 90s pop acts over half the crappy R&B Hip Hop stuff with autotune masking the fact they cannot sing for s***!!! So I did feel very sad when I heard the news that he did pass away. It is very unfortunate to lose a guy who seems really down to earth.

Family Outing to IKEA

I know this is supposed to be a music blog but I decided to expand because I do have other interests hmmm....weird how that one works.

I must say this weekend has been relaxing unlike others where I've been too busy to just sit at home and listen to albums. That's my fave type of weekend where I can lose myself in an album or two. Anyways, today the whole family and I headed to IKEA to surprisingly not look at home wares and furniture but to eat in their restaurant. Personally I have come to hate the idea of restaurants attached to massive retail conglomerates due to many bad experiences in the States. However, IKEA has done the impossible made a cafeteria restaurant type thing not only a place with really good food but a good atmosphere as well.

We love Swedish food as my family and I have a personal connection with the country as we all, minus my brother lived there for a year and my Dad even longer. We have many Swedish friends so we have learnt what is good and what is mediocre and thus I am able to report that the Swedish meatballs are AMAZING! Obviously they will not be as good as the ones you can get in a local place in Sweden but here, there aren't any Swedish restaurants as far as I know (if there are any please recommend away).

Back to the topic at hand IKEA have a policy that encourages families to have a good time mixed with Swedish efficiency. Note, the fact that once you finish your meal you take your try with all your plates and cutlery to a rack so employees can do more important jobs than clean up mine and your mess. This is actually followed too. You get refillable drinks and eat in a way that suggests the Swedes have got it right. Are you interested yet??

I'm obviously sounding like some sort of advertisement for IKEA and freaky person but more importantly it's about family. Every week we do something together whether it be eat out or take a walk in the park but we bond over food, that's just what my family is like. We catch up on the goss, laugh with, and at each other and plan things all over a meal. It is a time for talk and laughter and IKEA just happened to be the vehicle to let this happen.

So if any of you out there have some time take your friends/family to IKEA for a meal instead of just shopping you won't be disappointed.

2009 DVD Releases: The Killers Live from The Royal Albert Hall DVD1202

How cool does this look...wow can't wait!!!! I know this is no substitute for actually being there but if you miss out on tix or just want to relive the experience then this is for you. I'm a huge fan of concert DVDs but I'm very particular about which ones I get. The band has to not only be good live but have a show that attacks your senses, I'm talking lights, video screens...dancers and other things to make you think beyond the singer/band on stage. The above trailer shows a band in their prime and they seem to have the audience eating out of their hands and I've seen them live and they have all of the above to keep you interested.

I'm a huge fan of these guys as you can probably guess and believe if they keep changing their sound up then music lovers of all types will only benefit. Music journalists love to give them crap but I think they're ambition and sometimes perceived cockiness is good as U2 do it all the time and get away with it and they are definitely not as bad as those Oasis lads. So check this out when Live from The Royal Albert Hall is released on November 10th 2009.

It's all looking really good and guys what did you all think of Muse's The Resistance. Personally, it overwhelmed my senses and I'm still trying to figure it out. But you'll hear more about this in my review.

Edit: The band also have a new track for the New Moon soundtrack, yes do I know its part of the Twilight franchise but more importantly its a new Killers song!!! The new track is called a White Demon Love Song...hmmm. Anyways, you can hear it in a few weeks so you know YouTube that one.

A few days ago the initial BDO lineup was released and OMG (I've been watching far too much Gossip Girl for some reason) MUSE are headlining. This could be the one for me this year as I've only ever been to one BDO since in previous yrs I've only ever wanted to see 1 or 2 bands but there are a few bands that are making the trip so the $140 price tag might be worth it. I was also a bit bummed that the David Bowie rumour didn't eventuate but it is still good. Although, do I want to wait and see if Muse do any side shows and just spend the $$$ on that, what do you all think? Ok, moving on....

U2 The Unforgettable Fire Remastered

U2 are remastering The Unforgettable Fire for its 25th anniversary which I think is their most underrated album especially since the Joshua Tree is really the companion to it and we all know the Joshua Tree is good but not as good as the critics say. Anyways, what is so special about this reissue?? Well...their will be 4 different versions that include B-sides from TUF sessions, live recordings and other goodies.

The 4 versions include:

3. Deluxe double CD with 36 page book

The most interesting thing here is the inclusion of Disappearing Act which was originally started in 1983 with Eno and Lanois and called 'White City' at the time but was revisited again this year. I love how the lads revisit songs that didn't make old albums how fantastic. They played a snippet of it in an interview with BBC radio and you can hear it below. By the way, it's not the greatest quality but it will do.

Muse at the 2009 VMAs

I absolutely hate the VMA's mainly because the channel that created them continues to pull cheap stunts to get people interested and forget that the M in 'MTV' stands for Music. However, Muse were there and the only thing worth watching really. They put in an amazing performance with 'Uprising' but they were not on the main stage at Radio City Music Hall. There is also an unaired performance of 'The Resistance' which is pretty damn awesome!!!

The Killers are apparently releasing a covers album as their follow up to Day & Age. This is an interesting idea as these guys seem to do really interesting things with covers. Also, I've added some vids of the covers they have done at live shows and recorded. But one question remains, what covers should be on this album. I vote for 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' and 'Drive' definitely being on the album and maybe a Pink Floyd one too. What do you think??

Oasis - Are they are aren't they?

Noel Gallagher quit Oasis!! Apparently, but I think it is all but confirmed now that Liam broke Noel's guitar backstage before a festival gig near Paris and thus any further shows have been cancelled with the band no longer in existence. However, given time there maybe news on a replacement but I really don't see how Oasis can go on without the Gallagher brothers together. Noel released an official statement on their website that you can view here. This is all a great shame as they are one of the great rock and roll bands of my time!!!

2009 Album Reviews: LA ROUX

The debut album by La Roux is a winner. It is a triumph of an electro-pop album that is unashamedly full of radio friendly singles. However, underneath the funky beats and coolness is a serious take on relationships that could possibly be reflective of Elly Jackson’s own personal relationships. Songs like ‘Cover My Eyes’, I’m Not Your Toy and ‘Armour Love’ were unexpected on my first listen but are achingly beautiful and ‘Armour Love’ has since become one of my fave songs of the year. Each song is made to be a single and after hearing ‘In For the Kill’, ‘Quicksand’, ‘Bulletproof’ and ‘Fascination’ prior to the album’s release I was pretty sure that those 4 were just the best songs and the rest were going to be duds. I was wrong. There are some great moments on this record and for me the highlight is ‘Colourless Colour‘. I mean c’mon, how can you not like a chorus like,

"...Early nineties decor
It was a day for
We wanted to play
But we had nothing left to play for
Colourless colour
Once in fashion
And soon to be seen..."

I’m glad they are holding out on releasing this as a single (FYI - fourth single is I’m Not Your Toy) because it leaves listeners with room to be surprised when this thumping tune comes on. There are some bizarre moments as evident by ‘Tigerlily’ where there is this odd spoken bit which is very reminiscent of ‘Thriller’. It sounds like they used the same guy as the tone of his voice is practically the same but I doubt it because I think it’s her father. To me, it ruins a perfectly good song. Other cool songs include ‘As If By Magic’ which seems to be an interesting take on a break up song. It’s quite brilliant in that respect and not too depressing. I also must say that I was unaware of the power of Jackson’s voice as every other electro-pop singer (male or female) out there does not have the range she has or the beautiful falsetto. If she was singing in any other style people would be commenting on how great a singer she is but unfortunately the style itself has seen too many with mediocre vocal talent. I am definitely intrigued by her too as she seems to be coming to terms with her sudden rise in popularity as teens want to emulate her style. It is also good to see that a band or duo is able to share equally in the creative direction of the music even though it does seem that La Roux is Jackson.

La Roux is here to stay! This record is not just another of the many electro-pop albums released this year but the pop album of the year and it's synthesizer based which just happens to be right on trend. Also, fingers crossed they take out the Mercury Prize which is handed out in early September. Check out these RAD live performance videos if this doesn't get you hooked to La Roux then nothing will.

Please please check this video out from U2's 360 Tour it's UNBELIEVABLE! This just proves that the lads have still got it. The stage design is amazing and they keep doing it over and over again with a show that no one has ever seen before. I mean the progression is staggering from ZooTV to Popmart to Elevation to Vertigo to THIS...bloody hell. They still have the most innovative live shows amongs any band anywhere in the world and manage to put on a rocking show too.

I'm really hoping this tour comes here but I seriously doubt it. However, there are some amazing videos on the net that make you feel like you are there which is a small consolation. 2009 Album Releases: ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN - THE FOUNTAIN

I sometimes wonder what I did without the Google news search function. I love just putting a random band in and seeing what recent news relating to the band come up or whose now talking about them. This is what happened when I was on my way to work one particular day and as I usually do I was listening to my Ipod on shuffle and was very happy to have Echo & the Bunnymen come through my headphones. I was so happy infact that I went on to listen to most of the album on the way back home. Anyways, I was so excited about my rediscovery of Echo I went and Google News searched them and lo and behold they are releasing a new album this year!!!!

'The Fountain' will be released on October 12th and the first single 'Think I Need It Too' will be released on September 28th. There is to be a collaboration with Chris Martin but aside from that it looks to be a cracker as their previous two albums were not as successful as they could of been or probably deserved to be. Unfortunately I don't have an album cover or a full tracklisting. But I do have a few confirmed tracks and four of them are available to listen to on their website so check it out here!!! Grunge rockers Pearl Jam release their 9th album Backspacer on September 20th. This should be a good one and may I say how FRICKING AWESOME the cover art is, it may just be the best this year and it's not really the official cover. 2009 Concert Reviews: Yves Klein Blue at Northcote Social Club 10/07/2009

Yves Klein Blue gave a rousing performance at the Northcote Social Club a few Fridays ago in support of their first full length album 'Ragged & Ecstatic'. I have to say I hadn't really heard much of them as I don't really listen to the radio and I usually discover a band via word of mouth or through music magazines. However, a mate suggested going to this and I jumped at the chance as I need to get back into my Aussie music. It was totally worth it!! The gig was sold out so a good solid crowd was there to listen to some great music. They played all their most famous songs including 'Getting Wise' and 'Polka' from the car ad (for those that live in Oz). If I'm talking sound I think they have a bit of Franz Ferdinand thing going with some Cold War Kids in there. The Cold War Kids thing now makes a lot of sense as their record is produced by Kevin Augunas who worked with Cold War Kids. These guys are really something to look out for so don't waste anytime and go check out their work!!!

I have to say I discovered another band, Philadelphia Grand Jury who blew me away and I have to admit I might just like them a little bit more than Yves Klein Blue...sorry I can't help it. You can listen to some of their stuff here. Also, you MUST see them live wherever you are. I can't remember the other support act's name but they were fairly good and I can only describe their sound as power-pop. The venue itself was great...it had a real grunge vibe and I think it can rival some of the more famous Melbourne venues like East Brunswick Club and the Espy.

Triple J's Hottest 100 Of All Time

Alternative radio station Triple J has compiled the hottest 100 songs of all time as voted by the public. This is always interesting as everyone has different tastes and even for myself my fave songs of all time change on a weekly basis and even daily if you can believe it.

I am surprised that the Beatles only had three songs in the Top 100 (A Day In The Life, Hey Jude and Come Together). Unfortunately, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit topped the list and I can't say I rate this song that highly but I can understand why it did get the #1 stop mainly because of the demographic of Triple J listeners. But I'm very pleased that Joy Division got the #4 spot as people forget how important they are to current rock music particularly the crop of bands that are rising through the ranks. Interesting fact: the last time this sort of thing was held by TJ, 1989 to be exact 'Love Will Tear Us Apart was voted #1...yay

One of my favourite bands Muse release their fifth studio album, The Resistance on September 14th. I've heard things is gonna be mega with a huge sound that is part electronica and part symphony!!! I can't wait as I've adored their past work and they are one of the most innovative bands ever. Also, see them on tour if you can as they are AMAZING live and they will be touring this year with U2 in September and on their own. I have a feeling this could be it and knock off Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's Blitz! as my album of 2009!

2009 Album Reviews: GOSSIP - MUSIC FOR MEN

Gossip’s fourth release Music For Men exceeds my expectations and to all those critics that say they are a one-trick pony get over it!!! I’m also in awe that this is a Rick Rubin record; it’s kinda different to what I thought I would hear with him at the helm of this particular band’s album. ‘Dimestore Diamond’ has a sultry and sexy sound that has been completely derived from the bass line. The subject matter is seemingly about vanity and women’s sexuality and how they individually express it or it could be about hookers...who knows. The first single, ‘Heavy Cross’ delves into a dance driven pop beat that is not only catchy but slightly different from the masses of dancey songs that have been released lately. I have to say the melody itself could have been written by YYY’s and appeared on their record, It’s Blitz! but the vocal qualities of Beth Ditto and Karen O are very different. However, I wouldn’t mind YYY’s covering this one just to see what the result would be.

The next few tracks continue with that bass line and a bluesy vocal but what stands out is that each song holds its own. Take for example ‘8th Wonder’ which is more rock based than say ‘Love Long Distance’ which is sampling with synthesizers and sequencers. The whole tone of ‘Love Long Distance’ is far more restrained as Beth just sings it and does not just belt it as she does on ‘8th Wonder’. The interesting use of percussion to create a unique rhythm makes ‘Pop Goes the World’ a fabulous party song and every time I hear it I feel like getting up and having a good ole’ dance, of course this is in the privacy of my own home. ‘Vertical Rhythm’ has a bit of a similar feel to ‘Heavy Cross’ which makes it lose some points in my books but don’t let that dissuade you as it still is a great song in its own right. I adore ‘Men In Love’ what a brilliant tune and I can gather a gay/lesbian rights theme through it. I mean the line “...men in love, with each other. Hey!...Shame, shame, shame...” says it all. I can’t help but ask if this is a somewhat autobiographical or personal song for Beth but who really cares its F***ING AWESOME. By this point in the album I have to admit that I’m kind of hearing some of the more boring aspects of the record. ‘For Keeps’ didn’t inspire me and I don’t think I would have noticed if it was missing from the album altogether. ‘2012’ feels like some of their work on 'Standing In The Way Of Control' but there is a particular few lines that I think are genius and just gets me.

“...a tragedy brings misery
misery loves company
company is misleading
I’ve made it this far...”

The last 3 tracks maintain the same course as there is no slowing down for the listener. The momentum is always there and the second last track ‘Four Letter Word’ could be the best on the whole record. I adore the use of keys and the subdued use of bass which is so present on the rest of the album. The only thing that I really question is the ordering of some tracks as it seems this song could be better suited further up but maybe it’s a conscious effort by the band to create a feeling. Closing with ‘Spare Me From the Mold’ is perfect as the intensity here balances that sexy opener of ‘Dimestore Diamond’.

This album shows the rise and rise of Gossip, a band worthy of the success they are receiving and I’m definitely considering it in my top 5 albums of 2009. They aren’t big here but that is about to change as they entered into the Australian album chart at number 13. This is huge for a band that many of my mates know nothing about. Fingers crossed they tour here and I’ll finish by saying if you like Gossip’s previous work you will definitely feel this. For all those new listeners get Music For Men as it is totally worth your hard earned money.

Remembering Michael Jackson

Well I haven't posted about MJ and I am pretty sure everyone from here to Timbuktu has but I do feel I should since his stuff is legendary.

I'm just sad to hear someone with such an incredible talent has left this world and wasn't always know for this but rather his mess of a personal life and being off in fantasy land half the time. But it is good to hear people playing MJ tunes and artists paying tribute to him and what he did for popular music. You have to remember he still has the highest selling album of all time.

Check out U2 doing 'Angel of Harlem' on the opening night of their tour with a special something for all you MJ fans. R.I.P. Michael.

Green Day 21st Century Breakdown Australian Tour

Green Day will tour down under at the end of the year. I am surprised they are coming so soon but they have a pretty massive fan base here so I guess they're capitalizing on that. I have to say I've always been a bit wary of bands that have been in the indie/punk or whatever scene and then suddenly become commercially successful. However, in the case of Green Day I think they deserve it and I'm impressed by how many youngsters (I guess 16 and younger...btw this makes me feel really old) have taken to their old stuff and know more about their history and music than me.

I don't think 21st Century Breakdown has been as MEGA as American Idiot but I do think that American Idiot was perfectly timed for the band as it fitted right into pop & political culture of the time. I will be honest with you I haven't heard the whole of 21st Century Breakdown only the two singles and the B-side but when I do I'll definitely tell you what I think!

Well the shows for this year look to be only one per major capital city but it seems there is room for more if they do so sell well. I doubt I'll be going to this one since I saw them in 2005 on their American Idiot World Tour. They were great live and it was made even better by the fact that the last Melbourne show was the official end of the worldwide tour for AI so it was pretty special. However, I don't think I'm willing to part with my $ for this one.

French electro-ambient duo Air release their latest album, Love 2 on October 6th. This will be their first full release since 2007's Pocket Symphony. Also, worth nothing is that they have chosen to release a digital single 'Do the Joy' on July 7th whilst a traditional first single, 'Sing Sang Sung' will be released on August 25th. Interesting... Anyways, hopefully its good because one of my fave songs and videos is by this band.

Bands and Artists to Watch: Noisettes

Noisettes are one of the most amazing bands I have never heard of until someone, you know who you are demanded I YouTube them. The singer and bass player Shingai Shoniwa has one of the most unique voices out there and when I did eventually YouTube them I was immediately drawn to their cover of ‘When You Were Young’ by The Killers. It was stunning and once I got to their original stuff I was completely blown away. I’m now officially hooked!!! I want to get their first album and all their EPs too....ohhh and I wouldn’t mind seeing them live.

I wonder how I missed them as they’ve been around in terms of favorable coverage by music mags and supporting some big acts like Muse, Bloc Party and Babyshambles and yet they only formed in 2003. I’m looking forward to getting ‘What’s The Time Mr. Wolf? (2007).

2009 Album Releases: BLUR - MIDLIFE: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO BLUR

This is only a compilation album but it has been built up as a catch-up record for casual listeners who may have missed out on Blur's illustrious career and the importance of them and the whole Britpop thing to music. By the way, don't you think the album title is amazing and makes perfect sense. The focus of this paricular compilation is their recording career highlights as opposed to their previous one, "Blur: The Best Of..." (2000) which was primarily about their commercial hits.

This is a brilliant idea and good marketing as they are currently on tour for some small shows before they headline the big-MOMMA Glastonbury. I look forward to reading reviews of their shows and see if they can still bring it live.

Britney is finally doing a full tour here in November and yes, I remember when she first arrived on the pop scene and was perceived as an innocent girl singing pop tunes when in fact they are layered with double meanings. Who could have guessed the rollercoaster career she has had?? Anyways, I was never a fan but now I can appreciate her songs as just catchy little pop songs, nothing more, Also, they often translate to amazing covers e.g. Travis' version of Hit Me Baby One More Time and Lily Allen's Womanizer.

I have no doubt she will draw a large crowd to her Down Under shows and I won't be going but maybe some of you guys in the blogosphere want to so here are the details...

Hey lovelies

I hope all that live in Oz had a wonderful long weekend as I did and weren't too cold! I don't know where all my readers are from but here this past weekend in Melbourne it has been bloody freezing, rainy and winter has only officially started a few days ago. But that didn't stop me as my family had a small gathering at our house for an umbrella-less evening of wine, takeaway pizza and movies including my all time fave Empire Records. However, that got me thinking about songs that make you feel warm on the inside like when you walk into a room with a fireplace going after you've come in from the cold or just feel like winter. This was not as easy as it seems as I've been thinking about this all weekend and I finally came up with 5 songs.

Helpless - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. This is a pretty sad song but to me it has a quality to it that reminds me to rug up. I always bring out my Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young collection in winter as it feels like the most appropriate time for songs with darker subject matter and beautiful harmonies.
Skinny Love - Bon Iver. For basically the same reasons above except that I've only known about this guy for no more than 8 months.
Next Year - Foo Fighters. You might be suprised to know that this is possibly my favourite Foo Fighters song of all time. Dave's voice is amazing on this and the whole album and I'm particuarly fond of this because the Foo are not too heavy. I know they can rock out but I like their softer side better.
Warwick Avenue - Duffy. I think I added this one on the list because of the video which shows a cloud and somewhat cold London (I think...)
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley. A great party song for any season really but when you can't be at a bar or club you may as well pump it out your stereo at home which in my case is surround sound with extra bass.

2009 Album Reviews: YEAH YEAH YEAHS - IT'S BLITZ!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ sound keeps evolving which I value very highly in a band as without it bands’ albums get boring, repetitive and predictable for audiences and critics. No band or artist should ever stay the same!!! Anyways, Yeah Yeah Yeahs manage to show off a less heavy sound and a more dancey-electronica based record on their third album, It’s Blitz! which I welcome for reasons above. I think the line “Off with your head...Dance ‘til you’re dead...” from ‘Heads Will Roll’ pretty much sums it all up...

For me, this is just what I have been waiting to hear this year without consciously knowing it. As soon as I heard the first single, ‘Zero’ I knew I would love the album and they manage to reach some extraordinary heights with this one while still maintaining YYYs distinctive style. The full on dance songs ‘Zero’, ‘Heads Will Roll’, ‘Soft Shock’ and ‘Dull Life’ are progressive songs that are full of great hooks and melodies but they are not lacking an emotional intensity to them. In fact the whole record has an incredible heart to it that sets it apart from every other dance-punk/pop album that has and will be released; and that’s saying something considering the amount of synth-based albums that will be released this year alone. There are songs that are less full on but still manage to keep the synthesizer as the main instrument of choice e.g. ‘Runaway’, ‘Dragon Queen’, ‘Hysteric’ and ‘Little Shadow’. These tunes helped me question what a dance song should be as previous dance songs even within the alternative genre often (not always) sound similar but these just sound different in every way. I’m particularly partial to ‘Runaway’ and ‘Hysteric’ for some reason but it will change again and as soon as I get over how overplayed ‘Zero’ is. I can’t go on without mentioning the drums on this record...Brian Chase does an amazing job! The drum parts have depth and are innovative that allow a dancey sound to become more present. As you can probably tell I play drums and I always listen closely to the drums on any record and this is by far the best I’ve heard all year.

I would also recommend you all go out and buy the Deluxe Edition as you get some amazing acoustic versions which in my opinion are just as good as the ones that appear on the standard release. I always find it interesting to see how bands do their own songs in a stripped back environment and YYYs give it to us in a way that makes the song feel new again but this has a lot to do with the fact that the 4 acoustic songs don’t have a synthesizer in sight.

This is a BLOODY FANTASTIC ALBUM and if you haven’t got it well you’re missing out. This is some of Yeah Yeah Yeahs finest work and hopefully they will continue to change it up and they will be recognised by all as the great band they have always been and still deserve to be. By the way, in case you were wondering if I had to rank as of now, my current list of albums of 2009 this would top it and I doubt anything that is to be released will come close to this. This band have an amazing rock sound infused with a bluesy vocal by none other than the fantastic Beth Ditto. I am eagerly anticipating this one and if the single is anything to go by it's going to be one of my albums of the year.

Bands That Changed Me: U2

My introduction to U2 was unusual as I was always aware of them. I can even remember seeing the video for ‘Please’ and I had heard ‘With Or Without You’ on the radio but it was not until ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ came out that I really took notice. As it is with any band that have a long career before I discover them I go back to their early stuff and listen and read what the critics and people say about them. I came to discover that first, U2’s early stuff was f***ing amazing especially their innovative work in the 90s and the fact they make a distinct effort to reinvent themselves with every album. Secondly, they are a band that reflects many of my views on politics, human rights, humanitarianism and social activism. This was the career path that I wanted and still am taking. To put it shortly I became obsessed with their music and their work, not just Bono’s solo efforts to initiate change but the way the whole band have worked on issues and have embedded this within their music. I’m constantly in awe of them! Also, their live shows are out of this world as they have put on some of the most visually stunning tours particularly ZooTV and PopMart. A U2 tour always uses huge screens and they and their production team are pioneers in their ability to design a set that despite the large venues they play has a level of intimacy for fans. I think the heart-shaped pit with people in it and around it on the Elevation Tour perfectly illustrates this.
The band also continues to make improvements so that we get the most value for money and the opportunity to see something new every time they go on tour. I was lucky enough to see them on their Vertigo Word Tour but I would give almost anything to go back in time and see them on the ZooTV and PopMart Tours. Since this is not possible I have to console myself with my ZooTV ‘Live from Sydney’ and PopMart ‘Live from Mexico City’ DVDs. I urge you all to go and get these as they are some of the most brilliant tour concerts ever and even if you’re not a fan you won’t regret it as I’ve converted a few with them. Anyways, they’re also going to be on their 360° Tour this year which is proving to be just as big as their others so keep an eye out for any footage, I certainly am and will post it here!

U2 in my opinion are the last of the great bands in the truest sense of the word as they represent a great unit that all have an equal say in the song writing process, direction and touring. But most importantly they are still relevant and writing great songs whilst being the best live band around today. I have so much faith in them that I have a particular line from 'One' tattooed to me with space to add one more line!

Bands That Changed Me: The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins are the first band I’ve ever truly loved. I think I was 10 or 11 yrs old and I just fell in love with everything about them and thus began my early introduction to the 90s alternative scene. I was very; very young to be introduced to this band and others like NIN and Green Day and I remember my parents being slightly worried but they have always respected my taste and even quite liked some of their stuff. The first Pumpkins record I owned was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and it wasn’t until much later that I heard Siamese Dream and fully understood the importance of both these albums to alt-rock. I remember being totally blown away by Mellon Collie as it was a double album with a musical feast of different styles and influences. It was hard rock one minute e.g. ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’ and the next it was anthematic (this is so not a word) with an orchestra backing e.g. ‘Tonight, Tonight’. The Smashing Pumpkins helped me define what music I actually liked because up until that point my parents were heavily influencing me. This actually turned out to be a great thing because I have them to thank for introducing me to the classics early on; but putting this aside, when you are young you don't want to publicly admit you have the same music taste as your parents. I wanted something to call my own and I found out about the Pumpkins through some of the neighbourhood kids who were a fair few years older than me and immersed myself in their world, alternative rock. This didn’t last long as my teenage years were about conforming because I was basically an American girl returning home to Oz and all I wanted to do was ‘fit in’ and not show my individuality. I was influenced by pop culture of the time and I liked 90s boy bands (some of it I still like e.g. Hanson) but I never forgot my love of rock and the Smashing Pumpkins will be forever part of that. Their albums will get played over and over again for the rest of my life and I'm sad to see the state the band is in now with only Billy Corgan remaining.

2009 Album Releases: LITTLE BOOTS - HANDS

Little Boots releases her debut album, 'Hands' on June 8th. I'm sensing a theme here as I seem to be talking a lot about female singers who have an electro sound that is reflected in a massive use of synthesizers. However, I think Little Boots is more on the pop side and this record will be just that; a mega pop album for 2009. I think 'Hands' will be welcomed by the mainstream as Lily Allen and Lady Gaga have been whereas La Roux will be limited to a specific audience, a more alternative or hipster crowd. Personally, I like her and I'm always on the lookout for a good pop record as there is so much crap out there...don't get me started on the Pussycat Dolls! Her first single 'New In Town' is a grower and the video is particularly awesome so I have included it somewhere below. If it wasn't clear before it is now, 2009 is the year for female electro-pop/punk musicians that are heavy on the 80s synth sound and all I can say is I quite like this!!! BRING MORE ON...

2009 Album Releases: THE MARS VOLTA - OCTAHEDRON

Prog-rockers The Mars Volta release their fifth, Octahedron on June 22nd worldwide and in the US on the 23rd. I'm amazed by the fact that these guys have almost released an album every year and they were talking about this record in Jan 2008, the same month they were to release The Bedlam in Goliath. This is so unusual as bands usually focus on one record at a time but these guys have stated that their next two albums have already been recorded. AWESOME for us fans!! I have gained an appreciation for these guys over the years because it is a bit different from other rock bands and nowadays with the onslaught of electro-pop/punk sounding records they are, dare I say it; a breath of fresh air.

This record is supposed to be less heavy than their previous work and Omar Rodríguez-López went so far as to say it was their acoustic album. However, don't expect a typical acoustic record! If you can't wait to hear what they are doing you can get a taste with their first single 'Cotopaxi' below. The sound quality is actually quite good.

2009 Album Releases: LA ROUX - LA ROUX

La Roux, a British duo that dabbles in electro-pop and synthesizer based music. Elly Jackson fronts the band but she is very much in partnership with Ben Langmaid, co-songwriter. Their style is influenced by 80s music E.g. Depeche Mode and Elly herself has a distinct often outrageous personal style which is increasingly becoming the norm in music and on the High Street. All of you can sample her first three singles below. By the way, sorry about the lack of embedding its been disabled by the record company so you're gonna have to click on the actual name of the song.

Bands and Artists to Watch: Howling Bells

Aussie band Howling Bells have been gaining international attention as the support act for Coldplay on the 2009 North American leg of their Viva La Vida tour. They also toured with The Killers and gave an impressive set at the V Festival this year that had Brandon Flowers singing their praises.

The history of the band is actually really interesting as they are made up of the remaining members of another fairly famous Aussie band, Waikiki who broke up in 2003. They moved to the UK to record their first album, Howling Bells which was released in 2006. They gained positive reviews for their first release and continued to move forward with the release of their second record, Radio Wars in February of this year.

Now...onto sound. You all are probably wondering what type of music do they play and who can they be compared to? Well, it is safe to say these guys (and gal) are in the genre of indie. However, there is a departure from first to second album. The first is more atmospheric and subtle in many ways . It sounds a bit like The Velvet Underground whilst Radio Wars is definitely more mainstream but this is not bad as I think they have just grown in their songwriting and worked with the right people. Anyways, you can judge for yourself.

I think the key to their recent success has been lead singer, Juanita Stein's sultry, yet not too retro sounding voice e.g. Duffy, Gabriella Cilmi etc... This will set her and the band apart from other singers and bands with female lead singers.

Sorry guys for the delay on the weekly tunes I've been very slack on that front. I'm actually listening to loads of different stuff but the album that is really getting to me is Regina Spektor's Begin To Hope. It hasn't been on high rotation until recently and since hearing about her new release I am immersing myself in her world. Also, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sigur Rós is being played a lot around my house.

Anyways, you know the drill, samples of the songs below are on your right for your enjoyment.

1. The World We Live In - The Killers. This is the 3rd single for Europe and Australia whilst A Dustland Fairytale is the tune for the US market. This is a great song on its own but is often overshadowed by many of the other songs off Day & Age.

Also, here is the band performing 'A Dustland Fairytale' on the Late Show with David Letterman with a full orchestra. This is an absolutely beautiful arrangement and if there is one thing you do this week it should be watching this.

2. On the Radio - Regina Spektor. Wow! It's so stunning and it plays well at dinner parties. There is this line that always gets me "...It feels a little worse than when we drove our hearse...right through the screaming crowd..."
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles. This is so beautiful it makes my heart ache. It has to be my favourite Beatles song EVER. I know a lot of people can't pick their fave and they are right there are so many songs that are worthy but this one is so special to me that I want it tattooed to me.
4. Fidelity - Regina Spektor. I told you I was listening to a lot of Regina Spektor lately. This song makes me feel light and happy and it has the ability to put me in a good mood almost immediately.
5. Heads Will Roll - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This is pure dance-punk heaven for me! This band just keep getting better and better and they have managed to change their sound in a way that fits seamlessly with their previous work. The best line from this song and possibly the whole album is "Off with your head, dance until your're dead..." It sums everything up about It's Blitz!.

2009 Album Releases: REGINA SPEKTOR - FAR

Sorry about the lack of posts over the last few days I had a massive government interview today and was spending most of my time preparing for it and stressing over it. It's went well so I should be back to posting daily.

Well to mark my return I have chosen Regina Spektor who is a singer-songwriter from NY but was born in the then Soviet Union and is Jewish. She has a really interesting background that you should all read about. I must admit she is amazing with an interesting voice that reminds me of Björk with hints of Portishead. Her music crosses almost all genres including folk, punk and classical which is not surprising considering she is classically trained on the piano. I would rank her up there with the the best singer-songwriters around, female or male. I am just in awe of her ability to write great songs and music and that is why I'm so excited for her fifth album, Far which is released on June 23rd. The first single 'Laughing With' is available to buy as a digital download now! By the way, don't you love the album cover I think it suits her.

Wilco (the stream) Available now!

We all know that bands and their record companies for that matter fear albums being leaked on the Internet. U2 had it happen several times during the course of the making of No Line On the Horizon and in one case it was due to Bono's over-exuberance. Anyways, back to Wilco their album, Wilco (the album) was leaked on the Internet a few days ago so the band decided to do a very brave thing stream it on their website for free. The band requested that this be referred to as Wilco (the stream) and best of all they understand the reasons we would download the leaked copy in the first place. I think that speaks to their respect for the fans. Anyways, listen to it here...

2009 Album Releases: MIKA - SONGS FOR SORROW EP

MIKA IS BACK. His EP features 4 new tracks and will be releasing a full length LP later in the year. I will keep you updated with this as soon as I get word. Mika's Songs For Sorrow EP is released as a limited edition (songs plus a high quality 68 page book and specially commissioned artwork from some of Mika's favourite artists) on May 25th with the standard version available on June 8th and is almost exclusively available on his official website MikaSounds. Also, you can hear both 'Lady Jane' and 'Lonely Alcoholic' on his site, what do you think? Is it too repetitive or is the future for him looking brighter than ever? So get yourself there pronto!

AC/DC BLACK ICE WORLD TOUR 2010

Aussie rockers AC/DC return to their homeland and NZ for their first time since 2001. They will hopefully be playing a good mix of old and new stuff. They will be debuting songs from their 2008 release Black Ice (their first in over 8 years) which I can honestly say I was not very impressed with. Anyways, this is going to be a massive tour and the dates are as follows for 2010:

January 30, Wellington, venue TBC
February 6, Auckland, venue TBC
February 11, Melbourne, Etihad Stadium
February 18, Sydney, ANZ Stadium
February 25, Brisbane, Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre
March 2, Adelaide, Adelaide Oval
March 6, Perth, Subiaco

The dates are quite far apart which suggests that more will be added as one Melbourne date is just not enough as far as I'm concerned. Rumour has it there will be a show at Uluru.

Wolfmother will be supporting which is the perfect opportunity to showcase songs from their new album 'Cosmic Egg' which is released in September of this year. Also, it will be interesting to see them live with their new lineup. Let's hope 'Cosmic Egg' is a success because anything less will prove that Andrew Stockdale walking out on the original band was an epic failure. Back to Acca Dacca, tickets will be reasonably priced at $99 and $150 so you better get your act together when tix go on sale on Monday, May 25th at 9am through Ticketmaster!

2009 Concert Reviews: Little Red at Hi-Fi Bar 8/5/09

I can honestly say that Little Red is one of the most unique bands out there. First, there is no official lead singer as it rotates among three talented guys. There are five members and they all sing harmonies except the drummer who is extremely entertaining as it is with his Ringo Starr head bob. Second, their energy feeds off into the crowd which makes for a great time for all and vice versa. Third, they have the talent to be a much bigger band so commercial radio and TV play LITTLE RED NOW!!

Before the gig really started my friend said she did not expect the crowd that were there but I knew differently as Little Red appeal to the hipster and retro crowd. By the way, there is nothing wrong with hipster gear and those that like retro clothing as I like some of it. The Hi-Fi Bar is a classic Melbourne venue, one I’ve been to many times even for underage gigs so I definitely love it and will continue to go there until I decide to stop going to gigs or leave Melbourne. The first support band, Young Lovers were really decent. They have a pretty straight forward indie-rock sound that is similar to the Britpop of the 90s and most importantly after the gig I felt they complimented Little Red’s 60s/70s-ish sound. I’ll probably be down at JB to buy their EP because I think they have a future worth watching. The second act, Ground Components was different to say the least. These guys combine rock with an interesting use of Latin conga and bongo drums, keys and standard guitars and drums. The music is fantastic but the vocals are strange and that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad as it just left me perplexed. The lead singer does a lot of screaming which does not match the style of music they play and I have to admit when I first heard them play I knew it was going to be good but then the singer started and my friend and I both gave each other confused looks. He has some Peter Garrett dance moves which were great as at least he and the rest of the band gave a lot. Also, I should say the guitarist broke his foot and played the entire show in a chair...good one as I can imagine how uncomfortable he was.

Now onto the main event...Little Red. As soon as Ground Components finished their set much of the crowd left the bar and moved to the pit and surrounding area. My mate and I found a good spot and hung out for the start. As I said before they certainly know how to put on a good show and I think they were excited to be playing their hometown crowd. They showcased tracks from their LP, Listen to Little Red and some new tracks. I like the fact that they appreciate good music and I adore most music from the 60s so this appeals to me on a personal level. There is also a bluesy feel which was particularly evident in the live setting and some of the new songs. The crowd was also really into it and many people knew the words to all the song (minus any new ones) and enthusiastically responded to any crowd participation initiated. For the last song before the encore Ground Components and I guess a couple of both bands’ friends joined Little Red on stage in a mass of dancing and other randomness. Little Red’s set ended with a new song and a classic so we could all go home happy.

All I have to say is if this is what Melbourne and Oz, for that matter is producing then there is nothing to worry about. Enjoy all the photos!

No Doubt have have finally returned for their first televised performance in 5 years on the Today Show. I feel a great affinity for this band as they were a part of the soundtrack to my teenage years and one of the few rock bands with a female lead singer that really held her own. On the Today Show they performed old hits 'Spiderwebs', 'Don't Speak' and 'It's My Life' which definitely made me feel all warm and gooey inside and you can get the same feeling by viewing these videos.

Also, the band will be appearing in an episode of Gossip Girl and will be on American Idol May 6th. Check it out live if you can but I'm sure it will be all over the net soon after so no need to worry about missing them!

2009 Album Releases: KASABIAN - WEST RYDER PAUPER LUNATIC ASYLUM

So Kasabian are back and will release their oddly titled third album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum on June 8th 2009. Supposedly, this is the name of a real mental institution. I don't have a tracklisting but as soon as I get it I will post ASAP but I do know that the first track off it will be 'Underdog' and there will be a duet with actress Rosario Dawson called 'West Ryder/Silver Bullet'.

The first single 'Vlad the Impaler' was available for free download from their website on the 31st of March. However, it stopped being available on April 3rd but you can still see the video here:

The next single is 'Fire' (officially released on June 1st) and they did it again by releasing another amazing video. Both 'Vlad the Impaler' and 'Fire' have interesting story based videos rather than just performance videos that many other rock bands tend to favour. The music video avenue has gone through what I see as a huge downturn because chart topping singers and band's videos tend to dominate music channels even though their videos are essentially horrible. The less mainstream artists that produce the great videos never get the airtime they deserve e.g. Sigur Rós. Well enough of the ranting check out the video below, tis' THE BEST!!

I'm very excited for this release and to get you all in the mood...here is Wilco performing Wilco (the song) at a Barack Obama rally in 2008. It looks like this song will be appear on the new one....whooohoooo, can you tell I like it?

Hey all

I've got word that some of you using Internet Explorer keep getting an "Operation Aborted" message and can't access my blog. Well I googled the problem and supposedly it has to do with my Followers widget so I took it down for the time being. I really want to put it back up as its good advertising so it will be back up tomorrow.

So please follow this advice:
1. Use Firefox which I use anyways and therefore didn't notice the problem in the first place. Firefox is better anyways so try it out it's more user friendly!
2. Upgrade to IE8 which is available now.

2009 Album Reviews: NEIL YOUNG - FORK IN THE ROAD

Neil Young returns with what I see as an industrial album. In a previous post I said that the record was based around his hybrid-engine car project, Lincvolt. Well now that I have heard it I can definitely vouch for this as running throughout is an auto-centric feel with an environmental message to find alternative energy sources. This is evident in every song but the lyric that gets me is on ‘Get Behind the Wheel’ where he sings.

“You know she loves those long slow curves
So take her for a spin
(You gotta get behind the wheel)...she always wants to please you...”

Young is very open about his political stance and his support of social issues so if you are not into the political being overt in music this may not be your thing. However, I believe the best music ever written has been political or about certain issues and without this music would be dull and lifeless.

What to expect from ‘Fork In The Road’? I think there are some amazing songs on this album. ‘When Worlds Collide’ is the perfect opener because it’s an up- tempo rock song. I see in this song a lot of comparisons with his previous work e.g. Rockin’ In the Free World’ but without the punch in the chorus or seminal lyric or phrase. On first listen I enjoyed the tune but didn’t think it was one of my favourites from the album but now it’s growing on me rapidly. ‘Fuel Line’ isn’t anything too exciting but it does go well with ‘When Worlds Collide’. I really don’t have much to say about this except for the fact that his voice pretty much sounds the same as it did in the 60s. I don’t know if you all noticed that but whenever he releases a record you can tell from the get go that it’s Neil Young. ‘Just Singing A Song’ is absolutely the best on this album! There is a refinement in this song that is just not present in all his songs. It has everything; a meaningful lyric that is also interesting and a great guitar part for Neil to play on. I don’t know what it is but ‘Johnny Magic’ just doesn’t appeal to me. I think this has to do with the fact that after I heard the whole album for the third time I was very much over the car theme. But then I figured this was partly due to me playing Neil Young (older material included) for about 2 days straight. I returned to it just now and have to say, still not digging it. Oh well... I think ‘Cough Up the Bucks’ has an AMAZING groove that grabbed me as soon as I heard the first couple of notes. However, throughout the whole song Neil uses the phrase ‘Cough up the Bucks...’ in an annoyingly repetitive way. This is definitely not his best but the music is great so he wins a lot of points there. I adore ‘Get Behind the Wheel’ as it has a dirty southern rock feel with loads of heart. Also, I think the female backing vocalists help balance Neil’s rough around the edges voice and adds some edge. ‘Off the Road’ is the first track on this album to offer some harmonies even though it is very, very subtle. I love it when he does harmonies as not many singers or bands do it anymore. From ‘Off the Road’ to ‘Hit the Road’ there is a distinct change and I once again find myself completely blown away by how great a songwriter and musician Neil is. I still love ‘Just Singing A Song’ but this is coming in a close second. I am taken by the way it feels a lot like classic Neil Young and the first time I heard him when my Dad played Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s ‘Helpless’ to me. When I heard ‘Light a Candle’ for the first time I freaked because it was so stunning and light to listen to. I suggest for all those newcomers to Neil Young that aside from the classics like ‘Heart of Gold’ this track can be part of your introduction into his world. The closer to the album, ‘Fork in the Road’ finishes it the same way we started with a true rock & roll song. I am not too fond of it because it does sound similar to other stuff here but I guess it could be worse.

For me, ‘Fork In the Road’ is an album that is difficult for both long term fans and more casual fans, like myself because it is in many respects a concept album. I, for one, got tired of hearing about driving, the road and cars whether in metaphor or not, but despite this there are some songs that really ‘get’ you in a way only Neil Young’s songwriting can. This is a great record by many standards and every time he releases an album I will always get excited purely because of his amazing back catalogue and he does such interesting stuff even if it isn’t always my cup of tea.

U2's MAGNIFICENT from Anton Corbijn's LINEAR film

I already talked about Anton Corbijn's film 'Linear' that came with some of the versions of U2's No Line on the Horizon. I also said it was almost impossible to find online as you need a special code and password that only comes once you buy the album and its various bits and pieces. However, I was online and stumbled across the gem below, U2 performing Magnificent in Corbijn's 'Linear'. Obviously this is not the whole film but I do recommend going to buy the digi-pack or box set, anything beyond just the standard album to get access to this film. I promise you it is worth it!!!

Bands and Artists to Watch: Little Red

Melbourne based Little Red have been around the usual local venues and been extremely successful but it wasn't until 2008 we got a full LP called 'Listen to Little Red'. They have continued to prove themselves on the festival circuit and had a song on the hit show Underbelly. If you are new to the band I really recommend you check these clips out. They have great songs and a bright future with hopefully many great albums to come.

I will be seeing them at the Hi-Fi Bar next Friday and will give you a full report with pics from the gig. I haven't forgotten my gig review from the Killers set at V, just had real life stuff that has demanded my attention.

So it turns out I was wrong and Eskimo Joe's 4th album, Inshalla will not be released in June but May 29th 2009. However, this is only for Aussies but I will keep you updated with the international release date.

Do my ears deceive me, are Blur going to be recording another album soonish? Please say yes!!!! I hear they have a few comeback shows (inc. Glastonbury) in the UK this year which offers the perfect opportunity for them to head back into the studio. But, lets hope the tour goes well and they you know get along because otherwise I doubt they will record new material. Also, another important question, will they feud with Oasis again?? That whole thing takes me right back to the 1990s of Britpop and boybands!!

Hey guys, sorry about the delay between posts but I've been busy doing grad applications. Well I don't know about you but I had a pretty fantastic weekend. I caught up with friends for half price margaritas at Taco Bills and then we came back to mine for a chilled night. This got me thinking about a playlist or mixtape for a chilled night in with mates. There are a couple of ground rules that must be followed before I get into my list. First, don't play anything with too many beats as it will distract from your relaxed party, event, cocktail party or movie night etc...etc... Second, don't play anything too commercial, you want people to ask who that is but don't be too pretentious about this (cos' we all hate music snobs *wink, wink*). Third, nothing too unknown e.g. french new wave with more synthesizers than you can poke a stick at you don't want to scare your guests away. It is essential you have to find the right balance and then you are off and away.

Without further adieu this is how I would start a mixtape for a laid back partay.

1. White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes. A great song and the return of bands that write songs with great harmonies like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young did. It has a cinematic feel to it and was one of my albums of 2008.
2. Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Wow!! An electro-punk song to get the party started without taking the roof off. But its just the type of song that you wanna groove to whilst sipping cocktails and having a good ole' time with friends.
3. Dusk Till Dawn - Ladyhawke. She is all about the great hook that is addictive in every sense of the word. I have a high regard for artists that make good pop songs rather than just have hype e.g. Britney Spears' latest album.
4. Kelly Watch the Stars - Air. I have loved Air since the beginning and their videos are amazing particularly this one. This song has a sci-fi quality to it so check it out
5. The Greatest - Cat Power. She changed my perception of the female singer/songwriter and after hearing about her and this record of the same name I went and re-explored singers like Joni and Janis and discovered Joan Baez. This one just feels right at the point in a party where its winding down and you've still got a few drinks in your system.

Well thats it please precede to your right for samples of the above songs!! Also, I will have The Killers review from V up at some point tomorrow.

Record Store Day Australia 2009

Well hello folks...

Guess what time of year.....it's RECORD STORE DAY. The Aussie part is being held on Saturday April 18th (yes, that is tomorrow) with a whole lot of events being staged at different record stores across Australia. I think the idea behind this event is awesome as record stores are slowly fading away, I'm talking about the small ones not chain stores with the wave of downloading that is going on these days. The same goes for the album which has given rise to the importance of the single. I personally love walking through the different sections of a record store looking for the album I had planned to get but stumbling on other bands and singers I haven't heard of and walking out with their albums too. I also miss talking to people who work at record stores about what they are listening to. Ok, enough about the state of the music industry. If you are in Australia please go tomorrow and support record stores and for those elsewhere I think there are worldwide events in all major cities.

Also, is anyone planning to go? I think I might head to Basement Discs in the city, I've always loved that place. Ohhh....Little Birdy looks promising too.

A Bob Dylan album release is always an interesting one. I always find his way of promoting a record different from any other musician as he doesn't do many interviews and the whole full on promo thing. 2009 Concert Reviews: V Festival Melbourne - KAISER CHIEFS

I'm back again revisiting the V Festival. I absolutely loved the Kaiser Chiefs' set which was amazing because of the enormous amount of energy they put into their performance which gave us all something special. The band, led by Ricky Wilson were consummate showmen whose excitement fed into ours and vice versa. We danced when Ricky danced, screamed like girls at a Jo Bros concert when he ventured into the crowd and ohhhhed and ahhhhed when he was climbing the scaffolding towards the side of the stage I was rocking out at.

The setlist was a full assault of their great indie hits and the band as a whole sounded right on, like a band that knew they wanted to get the whole crowd off. The crowd felt this and my brother and I sang our little hearts out along with most of the audience. Even those around me who were really hanging our for The Killers were like these guys aint bad and were ready to buy their records. I have to say with the benefit of hindsight they were on equal footing with The Killers in terms of setlist, performance, environment and band presence and charisma. They certainly held their own and are worthy of headlining festivals in the future. COME BACK SOON GUYS!!!

Neil Young's 'Fork In The Road' was released on April 7 2009, sorry about not getting this out to you sooner. I haven't heard it yet but it is supposed to have an environmental theme throughout and is based around his hybrid car project...interesting. I do have a deep respect for Neil as I think he has written some of the greatest songs of all time. He is the 'loner' of the singer/songwriters and has always done his own thing whether it is popular or not. I see him as one of the very few to be considered a truly alternative artist or musician. If you have not dabbled with Neil Young's work or have been put off by him for any number of reasons I really recommend trying to look beyond that because he is often not given the credit he deserves. His stuff is very accessible and he is absolutely in the same league as Bob Dylan and in my opinion better, but who cares what I think what do you think? Do you feel the love for Neil Young?

By the way, I haven't even bought the album yet but when I do you all will be the first to read my review.

Weekly Tunes...

HAPPY EASTER everyone I hope you all are enjoying the break and eating loads of chocolate!! Well here it is is....the weekly mixtape of songs that I am currently dancing around my house to.
1. This is Your Life - The Killers. Since I have seen them live I have rediscovered the Killers. The album this song is off offers something for both long term fans and casual fans. I think they are continuing to improve with each album and people who bagged them for 'Sam's Town' are dead wrong as that is a brilliant record. This song is not a single and may or may not be one in the future, I think I heard the next single will the 'The World We Live in'. However, this song has such a catchy chorus to it and I feel something special when I hear the line "....And the sky is full of dreams But you don't know how to fly..."
2. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - The Beatles. An amazing song off Rubber Soul that sometimes gets neglected or forgotten amongst the greatness of the whole Beatles catalogue.
3. Time to Pretend - MGMT. Geez...this band have got it. What an amazing song. It sounds like nothing I've heard before. Everyone goes on about 'Electric Feel' but 'Time to Pretend' is just too awesome not to put on any party playlist either. So when you're going to have a party this is a MUST! Also, be sure to check out the Kaiser Chief's covering it on Radio 1 Live Lounge on the link below.

4. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode. My love for Depeche Mode knows no bounds. I love the darkness to their songs. How do you describe their music? I think it's Joy Division meets dance/electronic music. I believe it is officially described as New Wave whatever that is. I also love Dave Gahan too so that always influences my choices...hahaha
5. Daniel - Bat for Lashes. I talked about her and this song in the review I did for her latest album so if you want more look out for it in a previous post. This is a definite highlight of the album but I also think it will become an instant classic for the indie-alternative music scene.

Anyways to your right (on the side panel) you can sample some of these songs and be sure to go buy the song from the Itunes Store or the album they're on because you will not regret it, that is if you're anything like me.

2009 Album Reviews: BAT FOR LASHES - TWO SUNS

I’m trying very hard to like ‘Two Suns, ok it’s not as dire as this but it doesn’t grab me like ‘Fur and Gold’ did. I have been trying to work out what bothers me about this album for days and I think I finally came to the conclusion that both albums sound too much alike. That’s not to say that they sound the same in every way but there are similarities in terms of all being dark pop songs with interesting bass lines and beats behind them. I think this is especially the case for ‘Moon And Moon’ from Two Suns and ‘Sad Eyes’ off Fur and Gold which are both exceptionally beautiful songs but sound like they belong together on an album. They also both mix different styles within the one record and have put an enormous effort into drums and percussion.

Moving on to the songs itself, the greatest part of the album is the first half of the album. ‘Glass’ opens the album with a stunning vocal part at the start that flows into an unexpected rhythm with the tom toms being used to full advantage throughout. ‘Daniel’, for me is the pinnacle of ‘Two Suns’ and I believe it is the first single, so kudos to her and the record company for that choice. I find it to be gem of a pop song that turns out to be an unexpected, yet wonderful love song. The album has a lot of Asian influences in it which is not surprising considering her background and the use of intricate drum parts that give the album the sound it has. I see ‘Sleep Alone’ as one of those songs as I want to tap my foot in time with it whenever I hear it. ‘Moon And Moon’ is a beautiful piano ballad with great overdubbing of her voice to get that electronic voice in the background. The next track I find to be worthwhile of mention is ‘Siren Song’ which has certain epic qualities about it particularly as it builds from a ballad to something completely different. This is much like ‘Glass’ as it threw me initially but I grew to really love it! ‘Pearl’s Dream’ is a very dance and synth-based song that is not completely unique in a pop song but is something special for this album. ‘Two Planets’ mixes a whole lot of sounds and inspirations that make it into an exotic, and almost world music song which then goes into ‘Travelling Woman’ with its folky feel. Although, ‘Travelling Woman’ is a song that would not seem out of place on a number of other female singer/songwriters albums it somehow feels new when she does it. The record closes with ‘The Big Sleep’ which does in fact help make me go to sleep...weird, how that works.

The whole album is a strong release but I think I expected something more. I did enjoy most of it but as I said earlier she is continuing to write dark and melancholy songs which definitely makes for interesting sounds but isn’t looking into the future. Aside from this, I find her so interesting and therefore will continue to support her and would love to see her live show. I will end by saying Bat For Lashes has an exceptional understanding of the space within a song and knows how to draw you into her world so it is definitely worth checking out.

Single Reviews: U2 - MAGNIFICENT

U2 have released the photo for the front cover of their new single, 'Magnificent'. I just have to say this is a worthy single and really should have been first after hearing the whole album. There is nothing wrong with 'Get On Your Boots' but it just didn't set the vibe for the record. The song is great and shows off U2's ability to write great uplifting songs. Also, the band are filming the video for the tune in Fez so expect something stunningly beautiful. Anyways, enough of my ranting...here it is

2009 Concert Reviews: V Festival Melbourne - RAZORLIGHT

I'm back with Razorlight's set. I got a bit distracted with a few other things so I couldn't get it up right away. I have to say they are an awesome band and I was really into them about 5 yrs. ago but I got distracted with a number of other Brit bands e.g. the Kaisers who I honestly thought were better.

However, seeing them now reminded me why I liked them in the first place. I was a big fan of 'Up All Night' and 'America' from the second album but that was really it. I don't know any of the songs from their latest 'Slipway Fires' which was released at the end of 2008 but luckily they played a lot of their older stuff which got the most cheers anyways. I went nuts like a real fan girl when they played 'Golden Touch' and 'Up All Night'...it made me very happy. Johnny Borrell is an excellent front man...heaps of charisma and just the good ole' dirty rock and roll attitude. The rest of the band were in top form so Johhny could do his thing but I do think a lot of their sounds similar and that is maybe why I haven't been so interested in what they were up to. But I do reccommend that you see them live as they certainly deliver on stage. Should I get the new record? Can anyone tell me if it is worth getting?

Overall, totallly worth seeing but I guess I would have said the same thing if I had been to the Kills instead who I'm sad I missed but I did not want to give up our second row spots. Well photos below... KAISER CHIEFS NEXT!!!!!!!

2009 Concert Reviews: V Festival Melbourne - DUFFY

The Melbourne leg of the V Festival was last Saturday and boy, did my bro. and I enjoy it. This festival is way underrated in Oz as it seems to be more laid back than say the Big Day Out. It obviously does not have as many bands as many other festivals do but if the quality is there, like it was this year than I don't care. Remember quality over quantity. I got to see 3 great bands in a row in a great position. V is for over 18's only which seems to attract less (not all) dick heads who are there to ruin other people's good time rather than just chill and enjoy some good music.

We got there fairly early as I wanted to go see Duffy. I must say she was very good. I love her record but I didn't know how she would sing it live because the sound the album has a lot to do with the way it was produced. She had an amazing backing band and these two twin back up dancers that had the same hair, makeup and outfit which just added to the 60s throwback. I was very impressed and wouldn't mind seeing her solo show with just her fans. She didn't get as large a crowd as she probably would have gotten in Europe but I think she enjoyed herself. By the way, the crowd up front was full of diehard fans which is not unusual in the festival setting, but I think she managed to convert some of those punters that were either casual fans or strolling by. After Duffy we had a 2 hr. break so we caught a bit of Elbow from the stands and it was good. I haven't really heard anything from them except for their brilliant cover of U2's 'Running to Stand Still'. We left early to go to check out Jenny Lewis who was playing on the same stage as the 'Big 3' (Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs and the Killers) and this was the perfect opportunity to get a good spot near the front, and we did, and this remained our spot for all 3 bands' sets. She was actually really good and it didn't feel like we were just buying time until Razorlight took the stage. She held her own even though many people, including us did not know who she was. I must get her album as she has this country and folk sound but still very contemporary which I like.

2009 Album Releases: GREEN DAY - 21st CENTURY BREAKDOWN

Are you all excited about Green Day's new album? It's officially set for release on May 15th 2009. Well get excited because it's countdown time as their first single 'Know Your Enemy' will be released mid-April. Here is the cover for the single..pretty nifty.

Also, you can catch the latest news from the widget below but most importantly you can get a taste of 'Know Your Enemy'. Ok, the snippet of the song suggests their sound will remain similar to that of the 'American Idiot' record. Though, I hope the record does offer a few surprises.

By the way had a awesome time at the V Festival and was second row from the front for Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs and the Killers.....woooohooo!!!! Will review in full later.

Simon and Garfunkel Live Down Under

All you Aussie and NZ Simon and Garfunkel fans the legendary duo are coming for 8 concerts here in the land of Vegemite and the land of sheep. They have not been down under since 1983ish so it will be nice to see them at home and probably for the last time as I doubt they will be doing another world tour after this.

It starts in Auckland on June 13th 2009 and most importantly two shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena June 25 & 26 2009. It should be amazing and hopefully they play loads of classics. I am very, very tempted to go to this and I know my parents would be very interested...decisions. Well, tix go on sale on April 17th and hopefully they will be recession proof like U2 but I doubt it since the band don't tour that often.

Yo, I am heading off to the V Festival this Sat and am super excitied...yay for me and boo for you...nah, just kidding. I will review the sets of the bands I actually see. In case you didn't know the line up it is as follows...

This week I have a pretty eclectic mixtape which ultimately make the best mixtapes.

1. Untitled - Interpol. This is a great tune and fast being a classic in terms of the dark indie voice that shines through here and all their work. Paul Banks I believe started it and other bands just followed on from there. I love their work and will see them live eventually.
2. Gone - U2. I honestly did not like this song for a long time but Pop is my 2nd fave U2 album ever. It works so well next to 'Last Night on Earth. What an amazing song and I hope it make a return to their setlist this world tour.
3. Tower of Song - Leonard Cohen. There is really not much to say about this...he's a poetic genius.
4. To Lose My Life - White Lies. These guys are awesome and are worthy of the hype that surrounds them at the moment. Definitely one of my albums of the year.
5. Common People - Pulp. If you haven't discovered Pulp...where have you been?...ok, I have to admit I have only been a true fan since last yr. I had heard of them before but didn't take much notice but someone said you must take some time to truly explore their work and I did and was blown away.

Anton Corbijn's Linear

I have Internet back...lets all celebrate this with a moment of silence. Anyways just wanted you all to listen to the link below because its a song called Winter by U2. Rumour has it was supposed to be on No Line on the Horizon but did not make it due to track ordering issues which I believe is the reason the album was released later than expected. However, it doesn't matter because if you bought any of the versions beyond the standard version of the album then you have the ability to download the Anton Corbijn film, Linear which features Winter and some of the band in it. This is worth the price of buying the special edition releases because I have not seen it available to download which is actually really good marketing when you think about it.

I won't talk about the film but do you like/hate the song? Does it sound like another big song of 2008 particuarly at the start? Is Winter worth omission from the album? Personally, yes...now over to you.

Sorry its been so long between posts but I still have not got internet this is particuarly bad for a number of personal reasons but I will not go into that. Anyways I heard news that Bob Dylan is releasing a new album in April...interesting...what number album will this be? I'll post more details as soon as I can check it out from official sources. Also, I will have a full review of Bat for Lashes' 'Two Suns'!

Hey guys,
All right, so you know how I said that my Internet was going to be down a few weeks back well our service provider didn't actually take it off as they said it might be disconnected...wtf!?!?!? and will get around to it when they can. Anyways it happened suddenly earlier this week and we lost our broadband link and I was in the middle of writing emails and I lost connection..bugger. So at the moment I am at the library doing all my stuff and that is why I haven't had anything decent for you to read/review.

2009 Album Releases: ESKIMO JOE - INSHALLA

For all you Aussies, Perth band Eskimo Joe release their 4th album, 'Inshalla' in June 2009. I'm personally totally psyched about this as I have always been a fan of their work. Lead singer, Kav has one of the most unique voices in all of rock. Their first single is entitled 'Foreign Land' don't know when it will be officially released but it was debuted at Sound Relief today. I'll have video as soon as I can get it so WATCH THIS SPACE.

Also, just to let you all know I'm really enjoying the return of Midnight Oil...man, they sound really good! I hope he doesn't get to much crap in Parliament on Monday.

2009 Album Releases: THE DEAD WEATHER - HOREHOUND

Jack White has formed another band, The Dead Weather on top of his duties as the other half of the White Stripes and as part of The Raconteurs. They will release their debut album, 'Horehound' on June 9th 2009. The band consists of Jack White as singer and drummer, along with Alison Mosshart of The Kills fame, Jack Lawrence (bass player with the Raconteurs) and Dean Fertita (guitar, Queens of the Stone Age).

The Dead Weather are also going to tour in June in support of their album and you can but their new single 'Hang You From the Heavens' on Itunes now. They debuted as a band on Wednesday in Nashville to coincide with the opening of Jack White's recording studio, Third Man Records.

Hopefully this is a worthwhile supergroup collaboration and as soon as I hear the single I will review it.

Edit: It will be a bluesy rock & roll album which is cool but I am not sure I am totally convinced.

2009 Album Reviews: U2 - NO LINE ON THE HORIZON

So it has been approximately 5 years since 'How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' and every time U2 release a record it's an event and therefore you cannot rush reviewing their new work. It is so easy to be influenced by what music critics say so it was best that I took my time and got familiar with the new songs and watched some of their promo tour to see how the songs sounded live. I think this time around the hype was particularly obvious or bad, depending on how you look at it because they delayed the release of the album from late 2008 to Feb/March 2009. Over the last 3 or so months I felt the build-up for this album but it became really intense about February (especially if you know where to look) and this, I think puts pressure not only on the band, but makes Bono & Co. seem above criticism which they most definitely are not. The hype and circus, from where I stand is a lot about the music industry looking to U2 as the saviours of the industry itself. This is a huge weight to put on the band and no one can live up to this expectation as there will always be people who hate or love the record/band. I love U2 and am not afraid to admit that they are in my Top 5 favourite bands however, I am afraid that all the stuff that surrounds U2 will overtake the reason U2 exists in the first place, to make good music as a band; which is where they began and where they will ultimately end. I think Larry talked about this in an interview where he said that at one point senior people from Microsoft would drop into the recording studio which was a distraction from making music. It is often forgotten that U2 is not just Bono but there are 3 other band members who have just as much to say or more.

Anyways, on to the record itself...
This album marks a return to a more experimental sound rather than just a straight up rock album. I wholeheartedly embrace U2’s experimental side as I'm a fan of ‘Pop’ which I think is their most underrated album and not truly understood. Everyone should go back and listen to the small nuances of this record. In my opinion all U2 records have something special but ‘Achtung Baby’ will always be my favourite, which Bono has said in the past is the sound of U2 chopping down the Joshua Tree. This is such an apt description...love it!

So imagine hearing this is what the band were returning to for their 12th studio album. I was super excited as I admittedly was waiting for the band to change up their sound and slightly disappointed in their previous two albums, ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ and ‘...Atomic Bomb’ in terms of risk taking. I am a fan of the U2 that keeps the public, fans and critics guessing. I had heard early reports that it was a bit ‘Achtung Baby and some ‘Zooropa’ and ‘Pop’ in there as well; but I was really surprised when I heard it in full as I immediately compared it to ‘The Unforgettable Fire’ with some similarities to those records above with a lot of new stuff in there too. I am thoroughly impressed that after three full listens it keeps getting better. On the first listen, I was taken back as I didn’t expect it but it is full of great song writing. This is the U2 I know and love and I think inviting Brian Eno and Danny Lanois into the song writing process with the band turned out to be quite a good idea. The Eno/Lanois touch is definitely noticeable on the album.

I understand ‘No Line on the Horizon’ to be introspective and reflective as it does not bombard you like ‘Achtung Baby’ does but gets you in a much more subtle way. This is Adam and Larry’s album because it shows off the intricacies of the U2 rhythm section and how good those two are. It seems that the more U2 experiment the better the drum parts and bass lines get. Good for you lads! There are problems with this record and I think it does stem from the way the tracks are organised and certain songs just not being my cup of tea. The song writing is in parts epic and in others flat but I think this has a lot to do with lyrics...sorry Bono. All the songs in terms of the music are good but some of the lyrics just ruin it but there are moments of genius e.g. Moment of Surrender where Bono truly shines as a lyricist.

A track-by-track look at each song:

1. No Line on the Horizon – One of my fave tracks! The promo tour didn’t allow for us to hear this live but I think it will be awesome as it has a certain quality to it. I love the line “No. No line on the horizon”...the way he sings it is beautiful. As lyrics go, there are a lot of ooohhhsss... The melody is what sets this song apart from others and it almost could have gone on ‘The Unforgettable Fire’ or ‘The Joshua Tree’.
2. Magnificent – This is very much U2. It’s an epic anthem that will work well in stadiums when they go on tour later this year. I can imagine it will be a crowd pleaser as it builds much like ‘Where the Streets Have No Name’ and has an amazing drum part, once again proving that this is the rhythm section’s album. The chorus is typical U2 and the whole song is a testament to Bono’s lyric writing but the best part is when B croons “I was born, I was born to sing for you...I didn’t have a choice but to lift you up...” On David Letterman this worked well and Bono’s falsetto was in full glory for all to see and showed that it has a transcendent quality like ‘One’ and ‘WTSHNN’.
3. Moment of Surrender – This is possibly the best song on the album. It shows the band in all their grandeur as it’s a 7 minute or so masterpiece. What a fricking beautiful song was my initial reaction to it. It is a slow-ballad type song so I am giving you all fair warning but it has an amazing quality to it. Also, as a part-time drummer I found out that Larry recorded this on an electronic drum kit...how cool is that. This also has great lyrics like “At the moment of surrender of vision over visibility, I did not notice the passers by and they did not notice me...”
4. Unknown Caller - Easily my least favourite song. I found the music fine but the lyrics and structure are kind of all over the place. I'm not sure how to even go about breaking this down in all honesty. It doesn’t have something that pulls you in like all U2 songs do.
5. I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight – This is going to be a great song live as it has shown on the promo tour. I originally thought it wasn’t that great but once I heard them perform this live I was convinced it is a great pop song. It just has a natural beauty about it particularly the bridge and a bit of country when The Edge’s guitar solo kicks in. Is that just me? My favourite lyric is “...Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot...”
6. Get On Your Boots – My review for this is in a separate post and I thought it was good but now that I have heard the whole album and the more I think about it doesn’t belong on this album. I will say now it should not have been the first single as it doesn’t really represent the album at all.
7. Stand Up Comedy – This is certainly interesting as an unconventional love song. The best line is “...be careful, of small men with big ideas." I wonder who they are talking about here...I'm picturing Bono right now talking about poverty! The production of this is amazing too.
8. FEZ – Being Born – Obviously this began in Fez, Morocco and it does have an African feel. This is interesting because it starts off as one thing and becomes another. I think people might find it confusing but I see it as showing off their ability to push the boundaries and make songs that are almost like films. I hear the cinematic nature of the music and it is uncomplicated like that with very few lyrics. This is about the music.
9. White As Snow – What a beautiful song I feel like crying just thinking about it. This is very melodic and it definitely tells you a story. I am in love with the line: “Now this dry ground, it bears no fruit at all. Only poppies laugh under the crescent moon...” It sounds like a hymn.
10. Breathe – I know Bono has said that this is fast becoming his favourite song on the album. I am not sure I can agree with it being my fave on the album. It is a great song by most standards but along the U2 standard it falls a bit short. It will probably be a single at some point.
11. Cedars of Lebanon – This is an interesting song in terms of what is about. Bono said it was written from the perspective of a war correspondent and going by this it makes sense with lyrics like “...Spent the night trying to make a deadline, squeezing complicated lives into a simple headline..” Bono is almost speaking the lyrics at certain points in the song which serve to highlight the words and what it is actually about. It is not as beautiful as ‘White As Snow’ but it is a strong tune that leaves an impression. An excellent closer for a record.

That ended up being fairly epic. WOW!

The Decemberists release their new album, 'The Hazards of Love' on 24th of March 2009. This looks to be an interesting release for the indie band as it is reported to be more folk-based. U2 at David Letterman, GMA & BBC

So...U2 have been on a massive promo campaign and they have been performing on rooftops, tv shows and doing random comedy sketches. Well most of it is over now so I can accumulate all the videos available and let you view them all in one go. I advise you all to check out the band on David Letterman as their performances are top notch and it gives you a hint on how the new songs will work live. I think 'Magnificent' was unbelievable and now I actually really like 'I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight' after hearing it live.

2009 Album Releases: DAVE MATTHEWS BAND - BIG WHISKEY AND THE GROOGRUX KING

Dave Matthews have announced that their new album will be entitled Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King and released on June 2nd 2009. They are also touring the U.S. in the Spring and Summer and hopefully its a great record despite, the death of founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore.

There has been no tracklisting or album cover released yet but you will be the first to know when it does.

2009 Album Reviews: LILY ALLEN - IT'S NOT ME, IT'S YOU

I have something to confess it took me a long time to be convinced by Lily Allen even though I had been hearing great things about her. I don’t know what it was but something stopped me from jumping on the bandwagon but then I heard ‘Alfie’ from her debut album Alright Still and I found it hilarious, infectious and a brilliant pop song! I saw the video and that too had me giggling like a 16 yr. old. Still, I was not going to buy into the hype.....yet. This time around I was much more prepared for her re-emergence on the music scene and when her single ‘The Fear’ was released I was fully convinced that she was worth the hype. As a result I bought Alright Still and now I can see a huge leap from this to It’s Not Me, It’s You and I only sort of like Alright Still.

It’s Not Me, It’s You is a really good pop record and I think she had realised that there are so many artists doing a ‘retro’ type-thing and she needed to set herself apart from the Amy Winehouse’s and Duffy’s of the world in her second release. I like her taking a risk and in many ways it is a safe record as many of the songs e.g. ‘Everyone’s At It’ & ‘The Fear’ sound somewhat similar in parts, particularly the chorus. I am overall truly impressed.

The sound is very laid back and goes for an all round musical feast with sampling from different styles but it still remains very much pop but pop that I am not ashamed to say I dig. Pop has gone through a makeover with the girls no longer squeaky clean with perfect bodies and pre-fabricated tunes to sing; now it is about flicking the finger at the industry and life in general. I love it...and what is more endearing about Lily is how her accent truly shows through in all her music. Even when I wasn’t really convinced by her I loved this and it continues on this album.

The song that I am most obsessed with is ‘Not Fair’ it’s just so bizarre with its country twang and cheeky lyrics like “...I’m feeling pretty damn hard done by I spent ages giving head....” Yep, I think I know what this song is about. ‘22’ is what I believe to be somewhat autobiographical as she partied pretty hard, well if you believe the magazines and gossip. I don’t think it is a great song but others would probably disagree on this. There are some truly soulful moments like ‘I Could Stay’ which is actually very different from anything on her previous record and has a very dance/synth feeling to it. I have to say I like it more and more. Well, hello...synth-pop!! ‘Back to the Start’ is an amazing song because as you first listen to it you think it’s going one way but as it progresses it takes another road and this is very impressive. Another possible next single and generally awesome tune. There are some Latin tendencies within ‘Never Gonna Happen’ especially at the start but then it becomes this bizarre song with a very interesting rhythm. I am not convinced on this at all as I think it belongs at a school fete or carnival. The next truly great song on this record is ‘Fuck You’, I think I honestly put it there because of the title....really how can you not like it. The song is great and the chorus is the winner:
“Fuck you, fuck you.
Very, very much....
Cause we hate...
What you do...”
See I told you it was full of awesomeness!
The soulfulness returns with ‘Who’d Have Known’ which is an enjoyable listen and one cannot really say anything bad about this as it is a love song and we all know the world needs more love songs (by the way I’m serious). There is more of that synth influence on ‘Chinese’ but it’s another song similar to ‘The Fear’ and ‘Him’ but that is not to say it has no place here and I have to say it is much better than ’22’. ‘He Wasn’t There’ is an interesting choice to close the album as it could probably go in the middle somewhere as it is a bit of a retro throwback. I am not sure I like it and I don’t think it will grow on me.

It’s Not Me, It’s You is a contender for my album of the year. There are constant surprises for the listener throughout the album and within the songs. This is an incredibly difficult thing to do but amazing when it turns out right and sure enough it is effortless here. I am going to be following her career a lot more closely now and hope that she continues to develop and change her sound and style. Go Lily!

U2 Breathe Live on French tv

So U2 have been all over the place and today is the day, the release of their new album....woooohooo!! Anyways, all their tv appearances etc...have focused on the new single 'Get On Your Boots' but on French tv they also played Breathe which is a great song and probably better than the first single. This song is amazing and I think it gives a better overall picture of what to expect from the new album than 'Get On Your Boots'. I am just thoroughly impressed and I think their live performances will improve especially once they go out on tour and see what works and doesn't.

Hey all.
All my blogging plans have been put on hold for the next few days as I'm switching Internet servers and they are not sure when it will be up and running. It could be up to 3 days which is a pain in the butt but it's something I can't help. I might be online via other people's Internet so it is possible that I will be in contact with you all...who knows!

Although, this gives me a chance to get it together and have a few reviews ready to go as soon as I'm back online permanently.
